Backspin Roll

Description A coin is bounced of a table with backspin so that it rolls back into the hand that bounced it.

When learning start with large light objects such as a plastic poker chip.
Start Hold the chip flatwise with the right thumb and index finger at the 2 o'clock position.
Directions
  1. Sharply hit the table with the bottom edge of the chip and release it. As the fingers push down into the chip towards the table they impart a back spin on the chip so that it starts spinning on the table towards the right. The chip will have an initial leftwards movement though as the fingers will push the chip away from them as they push it into the table. The overall effect is that the chip will roll away from the fingers to the left, then the backspin will cause the chip to reverse directions and roll back to the right and into the hand.
  2. Catch the chip as it rolls back to the hand.
Comments
You need a fairly rough surface texture for the coin to grip properly and reverse its direction. A tablecloth or felt table works nicely. On a smooth surface the chip tends to move to the left then spin in place, though it can still be done if you are careful.

Once you can do the trick with light plastic chips you can start working with heavier chips.
Variations
Backspin Bounce
If you have a bouncy springy surface then you can cause the chip to bounce to the left on the initial contact with the table. Then when it lands the backspin will cause it to roll back to the hand. This variation is harder then the one described above but looks nicer.

Backspin to Hand Roll
If you do it on a smooth surface or a rough surface with a fair amount of force you can get the chip to roll away from the fingers a reasonable distance. Catch it with the other hand and repeat the move to roll the chip back to the original hand.
