Tabletop Fan Variations

There are many other variations of fanning with coins. Its worth exploring card fanning techniques though most do not work with coins, or arent as effective.
Fan Spread
(244k)
  1. Place a stack of 10 coins on the table in front of you.
  2. With one smooth motion push the stack to the right with the right hand so that the entire stack is fanned across the table. When doing this you start by moving all coins but the bottom one over 1/2 of a coin diameter. You then leave the second bottom one alone while the moving the rest of the coins, and so on. The result should be a line of coins where each coin lies on top half of the coin to its left.
  3. Now hold the topmost coin (the one to the right) with the thumb, middle and ring fingers and push it to the left collecting all of the other coins as you go until you have reformed the original stack. The ring finger should stay on the table and do the pushing while the thumb and index finger support the stack form the sides.
If the surface is smooth or slippery you will have to use the index finger to stop the stack sliding across the table when you are trying to reform it.

This trick gets harder as you add more coins. Any more than 15 coins and it starts looking messy.

Speed Pickup
A nice fast way to pick up the spread chips is as follows:
  1. Fan the chips out as described above.
  2. Now take a spare chip and hold it flatwise between the base of the right thumb and the side of the palm. Hold just half of the chip so that the other half extands out onto the palm side of the hand.
  3. Hold the hand out palm down over the right side of the fanned chips and quickly run the bottom edge of the chip you are holding along the line of chips.
  4. When you reach the left side of the fan quickly reverse the movement of the hand making sure that the chip held in the hand slips under the bottom chip of the fan lifting it of the table. You can now scoop up all of the fanned chips quickly into the hand using the held chip.
Double Fan
  1. Place two stacks on the table one in front of the other.
  2. Fan the front stack to the left with the left hand while simultaneously fanning the back stack to the right with the right hand.
  3. Reform both stacks to get back to the starting position.
You can also fan two stacks at once with the same hand though they both fan in the same direction. Picking up the stacks is trickier but can be done by pushing on each one with the ring and pinkie fingers.
Big Fan Pickup
  1. Perform a coin fan by performing Steps 1-2 above but with a large number (15 or more) of chips.
  2. Now grab the bottom most chip (the left most one) with the left hand and without touching any other chips push it to the right in a smooth motion so that the entire fan of chips is pulled back up into a stack that is balanced edgewise on the table. I keep my right index finger on the right side and push the stack into it to make sure the chips dont all roll away from the stack.
  3. Now you can use the left hand to push the stack to the right so that it comes up on top of the index finger. The stack should now be upright. Slide it off the index finger to have the stack sitting on the table in its starting position.
I have heard of people doing this with as many as 45 chips at once.
Arm Fan
(110k)
  1. Hold out the right arm with the forearm parallel to the ground and the palm facing up.
  2. Place a stack of 10 coins on the wrist and fan it backwards along the forearm.
  3. Remove the left hand and toss the coins up into the air and catch them in a stack in the right hand.
You can fan the coins with the left hand as normal, or with care you can fan the coins without the left hand by tilting back the forearm and moving the arm forwards slightly. Just make sure the coins dont fall off the edge of the arm.
Drop Fan
Hold the stack of coins in the hand and drop them to the table with a small sideways motion. The coins should hit the table and fan themselves across the table. The only bad thing about this method is that the top coin always slides away from the rest of the coins so that it doesnt look the best. You can use a finger of the other hand to stop this happening though, and then you can quickly remake the stack on the table with that hand which looks good.

A nice version of this variation is to hold a stack of coins in each hand. Drop them both so that each fan moves towards the other and stops when the top coin of each fan reaches the other. Now grab the bottom most coin of each fan and push them both towards the center. You now have a large stack held between each hand.
