Coin Roll

(336k)

Description This trick involves holding a stack of coins in the right hand above a table. You then drop each coin one at a time and they roll across the table to be caught in the other hand.
Start Hold a stack of four coins in the right hand edgewise between the thumb and the index finger. Hold the hand out in front of you with the hand perpendicular to the table, and resting on the table.

Place the left hand about 20cm away from the right hand, held parallel to the table and a short way above it.

Directions
  1. Drop the outermost coin from the stack so that it falls down onto the pinkie finger. When done correctly it should bounce of the pinkie finger and roll across the table towards your left hand.
  2. Catch the coin in an edgewise grip between the left index finger and the table.
  3. Repeat for the other 3 coins.
Comments Make sure the middle and ring fingers do not get in the way when you are dropping the coins. If the coins hit these fingers they may not roll correctly.

For the best effect try and roll each coin quickly after the previous one. It looks best when you have three or four coins all rolling at the same time towards the left hand.

Variations
Pressback Roll
This is a hard single coin variation but it looks very impressive when done right.
  1. Start as above but with a single coin and drop it so that it starts rolling towards the left hand.
  2. As the coin nears the left hand sharply press down on the extreme left edge of the coin. The index finger should press down hard on the coin at about the 11 o'clock position and push down into the table. This will cause the coin to reverse directions and start rolling back towards the right hand.
  3. Catch the coin between the thumb and index fingers of the right hand.
Step 2 is the hard part of this trick. It takes a fair amount of practice to make sure you can properly reverse the direction of the coins roll. The coin has a tendancy to not remain in an upright position but fall over. Make sure you hit it evenly with the left index finger and you can help do this by holding the index finger parallel to the table and maintaining this position as you push down into the coin.

When the coin is moving towards the right after Step 2 it isnt rolling in the conventional sense, it has backspin on it so that while its rolling right its spinning towards the left. This means the distance it will move before stalling and falling over is minimal.

Coin Walk Variation
A nice finishing move is to start with five coins. Roll four of the coins as described above. While the coins are rolling to the left hand do a quick Walk Down with the fifth coin while the left hand catches the four coins and gathers them into a stack. Once they are in a stack do a Walk Toss with the fifth coin so that it flies over to land on top of the stack in the left hand.
